I am a native of Oakland California, and attended local schools K through 12. I gained an interest in medicine in my formative years as a volunteer at a local convalescent home. Attendance at Stanford University for undergraduate education solidified this interest, through my relationships with upperclass premedical students, and mentoring physicians at Stanford’s School of Medicine. I went on to attend University of Southern California Medical School and completed my residency in Anesthesiology at LA County/USC Medical Center. The medical center served a working class and indigent population, and I found many similarities with it’s patients there and some members of my hometown community in Oakland. I had every intention of returning to the Bay Area to work in my profession, and have been back in Oakland since 1985. I achieved board certification and have worked 12 years in private practice, and now 17 years to date at Kaiser Oakland in Anesthesiology.
My knowledge and affiliation with Sinkler Miller Medical Association came by word of mouth from the local members. I attended some meetings and the fundraiser Dinner Dances, and was drawn to the Scholarship Committee and its program awarding scholarships to local high school students, nursing students and medical students who are from the Oakland area; the idea to provide financial support and establish relationships with our members for the purpose of mentoring and eventual practice in our locale was appealing to me. I have served on the Scholarship Selection Committee for many years and am currently the Chairperson. I am very excited about this opportunity as Treasurer to further expand the ways and means to our future endeavors.
